Safe medications to use in pregnancy 

Do not use a medication until you clear it with your obstetrician unless it is prescribed by them. There are some over the counter (OTC) medications that are considered safe for common discomforts of pregnancy when taken as directed. All medications listed are available at your local drug store without a prescription.  Generic brands are fine if available.

Cold/Sinusitis

  • Benadryl 

  • Cepocal Throat Lozenges 

  • Chloraseptic Spray

  • Plain or Extra Strength Tylenol

Constipation 

To relieve constipation increase the intake of fluids, apple juice, fiber and water.

  • Prunes or Prune juice 

  • Surfak  or Colace (stool softner) 

  • Dulcolax

Diarrhea 

Keep well hydrated with clear liquids including bouillon, jello, 7-up, soup, or Gatorade.

Hemorrhoids

Nausea /Motion Sickness

Eating something dry immediately upon wakening such as toast or crackers will ease nausea. Instead of eating three large meals, try eating six smaller bland meals spaced evenly throughout the day. If you feel that your nausea is uncontrolled, you may need a prescription medication.
